Every year since 1984, The Tate Gallery in London has organised a competition for contemporary art. 4 artists are initially nominated by a jury and their works exhibited for three months before a winner, often controversial, is finally declared.
The Turner Prize inevitably generates discussion and scandal relayed in all the newspapers and often fomented in the "gutter press". Some people love to mock contemporary art but at least this means that cutting-edge artists can become household names and star on tv series. Examples include Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread, Chris Ofili, Paula Rego... !
